I translate scientific concepts for non-scientists for a living.
I’ve designed graphics and brands with educators at 8+ schools across California, Oregon, Idaho, South Korea, and Ethiopia. My wife Catherine is an NGSS standard science teacher in the California public school system, and we regularly discuss the critical gap in quality science resources. This role is the perfect blend of all my worlds.
This work shows how I've simplified science into easy-to-understand graphics, created brands and websites for life science companies, built brands for elementary schools, and designed work for a university. My regular work and experience with educators, administrators, scientists, and non-scientists.
My love for art, science, and education started with a book
When I was 7, I was enthralled with “The Way Things Work” book. Author David Macaulay wove captivating illustrations of everyday machines (and mammoths!) to explain potential and kinetic energy, air pressure, and circuit boards. Flipping page after page, I was hooked. The blend of story, design, and well-explained science set me down a unique educational path.
At age 12, Lego Mindstorms were all I thought about. I built programmable, imaginative machines to solve problems. Beyond machines, at 16, my science teacher, Ms. Noller, saw me drawing the Cell Cycle with extra pizzazz and planted the idea of becoming a scientific illustrator.
In college, I went back and forth between majors in graphic design and mechanical engineering. After semesters in both (and a summer of Calculus-based Physics II), I returned to graphic design. Engineering was amazing, but my success, passion, and skillset were in visual storytelling. Upon graduation, I was hired by the university as the graphic designer to serve 80+ campus professors and clients.
My niche in education design didn’t stop there. I worked with K-12 educators on design and branding work for 8+ schools in California, Oregon, Idaho, South Korea, and Ethiopia. My parents, wife, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins are all educators. My wife, Catherine, is a high school science teacher in the California public school system. I’m familiar with the huge lack of NGSS standard science materials. I regularly discuss with her how hard it is to find quality science resources for middle and high school students. My brother-in-law is a physics and robotics teacher and feels the same way. Both of them regularly already use Mark Rober videos in class. My wife and I even watch them to wind down after her school days, just for fun (when we discovered Gus was a girl, plot twist!)
Today, I translate what scientists share into visual graphics that are easy for non-scientists to understand. I work for a life science marketing agency (Particle31) where we make science simple and unforgettable helping startups brand and launch their websites. Check out Cirsium Biosciences in my portfolio for a great example. Art, science, and education are woven into the DNA of my story, and it all started with a book made by a scientist-artist.
From cutting-edge science to the simplest of concepts, I’m built for this role. I have the utmost respect for educators and would be thrilled to resource them through my unique skillset blend of art, science, and education. This is what I live and breathe, and would love the opportunity to be considered for this role. Thank you for taking the time to read this!
